Elmer was born on April 20th, 1895.  Elmer's father was Charles Bensing and his mother was Elizabeth Bensing.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Bensing and Eva Seibel (Bensing).  He was the third of nine children.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Raymond, Charles, Chester, Edna, Aleen, Alberta, Gladys and Elizabeth.
