Alford was born on December 2nd, 1836 in Hodgenville, Larue, Kentucky, USA.  Alford's father was Issac Essex and his mother was Susana Neff.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  He was the second of twelve children.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Thomas, Samuel, James, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.  He died at the age of 59 on November 18th, 1896.
