James was born in 1847 in Hodgensville, Larue, Kentucky, USA.  James' father was Issac Essex and his mother was Susana Neff.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  He was the eighth of twelve children.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Alford, Thomas, Samuel, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.  He died at the age of 78 on September 17th, 1925 in Kentucky, USA.
