Joseph was born in 1810.  Joseph's father was Joseph Essex and his mother was Nancy Mcloy.  His maternal grandparents were James Mcloy and Rachel Moody.  He was the fifth of ten children.  He had four brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, James, Issac, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Nancy, Rhuamy and Hannah.  He died at the age of 26 in March 1836.
