Mary was born in 1809.  Mary's father was Joseph Essex and her mother was Nancy Mcloy.  Her maternal grandparents were James Mcloy and Rachel Moody.  She was the fourth of ten children.  She had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Joseph, Issac, William, Elizabeth, Nancy, Rhuamy and Hannah.
