Mary was born in 1846 in Hodgenville, Larue, Kentucky, USA.  Mary's father was Issac Essex and her mother was Susana Neff.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  She was the seventh of twelve children.  She had six brothers and five sisters, named William, Alford, Thomas, Samuel, James, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.
