Samuel was born on March 11th, 1842 in Hodgenville, Larue, Kentucky, USA.  Samuel's father was Issac Essex and his mother was Susana Neff.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  He was the sixth of twelve children.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Alford, Thomas, James, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.  He died at the age of 54 on January 2nd, 1897.
