Thomas was born in 1842 in Larue, Kentucky, USA.  Thomas' father was Issac Essex and his mother was Susana Neff.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  He was the fifth of twelve children.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Alford, Samuel, James, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.  He died at the age of 38 in 1880 in Kentucky, USA.
