William was born in 1834 in Elizabethtown, Hardin, Kentucky, USA.  William's father was Issac Essex and his mother was Susana Neff.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcloy; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Neff and <Unknown>.  He was the oldest of twelve children.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named Alford, Thomas, Samuel, James, Solomon, Lucinda, Luanna, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Martha.  He died at the age of 20 on December 24th, 1854 in Hodgenville, Larue, Kentucky, USA.
