Gertrude was born in 1894.  Gertrude's father was William Boehnen and her mother was Mary Anne Bowar.  Her paternal grandparents were Ferdinand Boehnen and Margaretha Neison; her maternal grandparents were Laurenz Bowar and Sybilla Schlimgen.  She was the youngest of five children.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Leo, Ferdinand, Ida and Rosa.
