Joseph was born in 1866 in Wisconsin.  Joseph's father was Joseph Oberembt and his mother was Catharina Oberembt.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Oberembt and Anna Christina Wallruff.  He was the fourth of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named Mathias, John, Adam, Bernard, Elizabeth, Mary and Catharina.
