Mathias was born in 1860 in Wisconsin.  Mathias' father was Joseph Oberembt and his mother was Catharina Oberembt.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Oberembt and Anna Christina Wallruff.  He was the oldest of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Adam, Joseph, Bernard, Elizabeth, Mary and Catharina.
