Bertha was born on August 14th, 1874.  Bertha's father is John Schlimgen and her mother is Amanda Josephine Heppner.  Her paternal grandparents were Johann Schlimgen and Margaretha Jansen.  She is the fifth of six children.  She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Frederick, John, Louise and Mary.
