Engelbert was born on March 5th, 1830.  Engelbert's father was Johann Schlimgen and his mother was Christina Schuetz.  His paternal grandparents were Joannis Schlimgen and Eva Zeres; his maternal grandparents were Hermanni Schuetz and Gertrudis Schuetz.  He is the third of six children.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Mathias, Peter, Gertraud, Sybilla and Elizabeth.  He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named John, Gertrud, Anna Maria, Eva, Louisa and Anna.
