Gertraud was born in 1824 in Bergheim, Rhenish, Prussia.  Gertraud's father was Johann Schlimgen and her mother was Christina Schuetz.  Her paternal grandparents were Joannis Schlimgen and Eva Zeres; her maternal grandparents were Hermanni Schuetz and Gertrudis Schuetz.  She was the oldest of six children.  She had three brothers and two sisters, named Mathias, Engelbert, Peter, Sybilla and Elizabeth.  She had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named John, Gertrud, Anna Maria, Eva, Louisa and Anna.
